Family Service Association of Wyoming Valley (FSAWV) receives funding through the Luzerne/Wyoming County Drug and Alcohol Program to provide services aimed at tobacco prevention and control. Currently, FSAWV works with the Wilkes-Barre and Northwest Area school districts in Luzerne County to implement the Project ALERT substance abuse prevention program. This project is a collaborative effort between FSAWV and the Luzerne County office of Penn State Cooperative Extension. Project ALERT has received national recognition for effectiveness in reducing substance abuse in middle school students. The program is taught to sixth grade classes at Solomon-Plains Memorial School and David W. Kistler Elementary School in Wilkes-Barre Area and the three elementary schools in the Northwest Area School District.

In Wyoming County, FSAWV works with the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center to provide tobacco education and prevention. Presentations were made to fourth, fifth and sixth grade classes on topics such as media literacy and resistance skills.

FSAWV is an active member of the Tobacco Free Luzerne County coalition. We participate in coalition events such as the Great American Smokeout and Smokefree Restaurant Recognition. As a service to the residents of Luzerne and Wyoming Counties, Helpline will develop a listing of tobacco related resources accessible through phone contact or on the website.
